A major new study following more than 16,000 students has found that banning smartphones from classrooms significantly improves academic performance — and, in a twist that surprised even some teachers, students who lived under a ban often ended up supporting it. For Honestnewsdaily readers, the research speaks directly to equity in education, a debate that has moved from staff rooms into national policy discussions.
The scale of the study matters. With more than sixteen thousand pupils involved, the findings are harder to dismiss as a quirk of one school or one charismatic head teacher. Researchers tracked attainment before and after bans were introduced and compared progress with similar students in schools where phones remained within reach during lessons. Across that large sample, the pattern was consistent: when phones left the classroom, results improved.
The Biggest Gains Went to Struggling Students
Perhaps the most important finding is who benefited most. Students who had previously struggled academically saw the largest improvements once phones were removed. Researchers say this makes intuitive sense: high-achieving students often develop their own strategies for managing distraction, while learners who find school difficult are more vulnerable to every buzz, notification and half-checked social feed competing for their attention.
That equity dimension changes the policy conversation. Phone bans are sometimes framed as a matter of discipline or nostalgia for a quieter era. This evidence reframes them as a leveller — a relatively low-cost change that appears to narrow, rather than widen, the gap between the most and least confident learners. Our earlier reporting, including our recent coverage of new research and discovery, has shown how small environmental changes in schools and workplaces can produce outsized effects on concentration.
Why Removing Phones Changes Behaviour
The study adds weight to a simple idea from cognitive science: attention is finite, and a phone on the desk taxes it even when it is face down and silent. Knowing a device is within reach invites mental rehearsal — wondering what a message says, planning a reply, anticipating the next alert. Multiply that low-level load across thirty students and a full school day, and the cumulative cost to learning becomes substantial.
Teachers in schools with bans frequently report a second effect that test scores alone cannot capture: lessons feel calmer. Breaks and corridors become more social, with students talking to each other rather than retreating into separate screens. Researchers publishing through outlets such as Nature have repeatedly linked reduced digital distraction with better working memory and deeper engagement with demanding tasks.
Students Warmed to the Ban They Once Opposed
One of the study’s most striking results concerns attitudes. Before bans were introduced, many students predicted they would hate them. After experiencing phone-free lessons, a clear share changed their minds and said they supported the policy. Familiarity, it seems, dissolved much of the dread: once the new routine became normal, students reported finding it easier to concentrate and, in some cases, feeling less social pressure during the school day.
That shift matters for any school leader weighing a ban. Policies imposed on a resistant student body can create daily friction; policies that students come to endorse are far easier to sustain. The research suggests that honest explanation, consistent rules and a fair trial period can bring even sceptical teenagers around.
Questions the Research Still Leaves Open
Responsible coverage should also note what a study like this cannot prove. It cannot show that every ban, in every school, will produce identical gains, nor does it end the argument about older students who use phones for revision, accessibility support or caring responsibilities at home. What it does provide is a strong, large-scale signal that the default assumption should shift: instead of asking schools to prove that phones harm learning, the burden increasingly sits with the claim that constant access during lessons is harmless. That reframing, more than any single statistic, may be the study’s most lasting contribution to the debate.
What This Means for Schools Deciding Now
No single study settles a debate, and context matters: how a ban is stored, enforced and explained will shape how well it works. But evidence from more than 16,000 students points in one direction. Phone-free classrooms are associated with significantly better performance, the students who struggle most gain the most, and opposition tends to soften with experience. For schools still deciding, that is a combination worth taking seriously.
